- Step 7: A Korean brand known for jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is not a true oil: about 98% of it is wax, mostly wax esters, which is why it is often called a liquid wax. It comes from the seeds of the desert shrub Simmondsia chinensis and is labelled Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil on an INCI ingredient list.
Because its structure differs from ordinary plant oils, it is relatively stable against heat and oxidation, which is a big reason it is used both as a single-ingredient face oil and as a base in formulas. This guide covers what retailers and importers need to know about jojoba oil for face products. It does not make claims about skin benefits.
Step 1: Know where jojoba oil for face products comes from
Jojoba is native to the deserts of North and Central America. A 2021 review in Polymers, Jojoba Oil: An Updated Comprehensive Review on Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Uses, and Toxicity1, notes that it is now also cultivated in countries such as Chile, Egypt and Argentina.
The EU CosIng database defines Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil2 as the fixed oil expressed or extracted from the seeds of the desert shrub jojoba. The Korea Cosmetic Association’s ingredient dictionary lists the same material as 호호바씨오일, the standard Korean name you will see on Korean packaging.
Step 2: Understand why it is called a liquid wax
According to the review, jojoba oil is about 98% wax, mainly wax esters, with small amounts of free fatty acids, alcohols, hydrocarbons, sterols and tocopherols. The authors say it is “widely known as liquid wax rather than oil or fat”.
Most plant oils, such as olive or sunflower, are triglycerides: three fatty acids attached to glycerol. A wax ester is one long-chain fatty acid joined to one long-chain fatty alcohol. That structural difference is why jojoba is liquid at room temperature yet behaves more like a wax.
Step 3: Understand its stability, and its limits
The review describes jojoba oil’s thermal and oxidative stability as high and credits its resistance to rancidity partly to natural tocopherols (alpha, gamma and delta). It also notes that refining or bleaching removes these antioxidants and lowers oxidative stability.
For buyers this means two things. Golden (unrefined) and refined jojoba can behave differently, so ask which grade a product uses. And “stable” does not mean “no expiry”: follow the expiry date or period-after-opening shown on the pack.
Step 4: Read the INCI listing
Swipe sideways to see the whole table.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| INCI name | Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil (some lists show “Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil”) |
| Korean standard name | 호호바씨오일 |
| CosIng functions | Skin conditioning - emollient, hair conditioning, skin conditioning |
| EU annex restrictions | None linked to this INCI entry in CosIng |
| Similar but different | Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Wax3, which includes a viscosity-controlling function |
A CosIng function describes an ingredient’s role in a formula, not a proven benefit. Make sure “Seed Oil” and “Seed Wax” are not mixed up when you prepare registration documents for your market.
Step 5: Keep product claims factual
Korea’s Cosmetics Act4 prohibits labels or ads that could be mistaken for a medicine (Article 13) and requires factual claims to be substantiated (Article 14). Jojoba oil is often sold with words like “pure” or “natural”; those also need to be true. In listings and staff training, stick to verifiable points: the plant, the liquid-wax structure, the grade and the ingredient list.
Step 6: Check these points before ordering wholesale
- Full ingredient list (INCI and Korean): is it 100% jojoba, or blended with other oils or fragrance?
- Grade: golden or refined affects colour and scent; warn store staff that colour may vary slightly between lots.
- Expiry information: Korean packs show an expiry date or period after opening under Article 10 of the Cosmetics Act; check remaining shelf life on receipt.
- Packaging: glass dropper bottles need breakage protection; plastic pumps need leak protection.
- Safety Data Sheet: forwarders may ask for it on air shipments.
